The number of patents which are applied for in more than one country is increasing. Most of these applications originate in the USA, Japan, Korea, France and Germany. Chinese patent applications are not often found outside of China.
In 2007 more than 6 million patents were in force. Half of these originate from the USA or Japan.
The "top-5" in patent applications in 2008 were Huawei Technologies, Philips Electronics, Panasonic, Robert Bosch and Toyota.
